Why Smart Coaches Struggle to Get Clients (And How to Fix It)

If you’re a coach, healer, or spiritual entrepreneur, this might sound familiar:

You’re great at what you do, you feel the flow in your sessions, and your clients get results.

But when it comes to actually attracting clients,
something doesn’t quite land the way it should.

I saw this play out very clearly while working with a former physician whose insights were incredibly deep...

but when it came to describing his coaching work, potential clients couldn’t recognize themselves in anything he said.

In this episode of The Geoff Newton Show, I break down why some of the smartest coaches often struggle to get clients,

and the communication mistake that makes your message sound intelligent…
but fails to resonate with the people who need it most.

You’ll discover:
• Why being “too smart” can actually hurt your marketing
• The hidden messaging mistake that makes clients scroll past your content
• How to translate your work so people immediately feel “this is for me”

If you’ve ever felt like you should be attracting more clients than you are, this might be the piece you need to turn content and conversations into clients.

Why Smart Coaches Struggle to Get Clients (Even When They’re Great at What They Do)

Most advice about how to get coaching clients focuses on strategy:

Post more content, pick a niche or build a funnel.

But there’s a deeper problem that shows up before any of that matters.

The coaches who struggle the most are often the ones who are highly perceptive, insightful, able to see what’s really going on beneath the surface.

In sessions, this is a superpower. But in your messaging?

It can quietly work against you.

Because instead of describing the problem your client recognizes…
you start explaining what’s happening underneath it.

I saw this clearly with a former physician I worked with.

When I asked about his work, his answers were intelligent, detailed, and completely unrecognizable to the very people he was trying to help.

(I share exactly how this played out in the episode above)

The Hidden Messaging Mistake That Repels Clients

Something I see all the time is coaches describing their work like this:

“I help people regulate their nervous system and shift unconscious patterns.”

Sure, it's technically accurate.
And it’s intelligent.

But it doesn’t connect with the people you're best suited to working with.

Why?

Because your client isn’t thinking:

“I need help regulating my nervous system.”

They’re thinking:

“Why do I keep ending up in the same situation?”
“Why does this feel so hard?”
“How do I actually fix this?”

When your message skips their lived experience and jumps straight to the mechanism, they start to feel disconnected from you.

Because they can’t see themselves in it.

And if someone doesn’t recognize themselves in your message…
they don’t move toward working with you.

They move on.

Why Your Message Sounds Smart… But Doesn’t Land

When you see someone struggling with something you understand deeply, your brain naturally goes straight to how it works, the root cause, what’s really going on under the surface.

That’s what makes you a great coach.

But your audience isn’t there yet.

They’re still inside the experience.

So when you speak from your level of understanding instead of their level of experience...

your message feels abstract, people feel confused, and that confusion kills conversion.

There’s a simple rule here:

"If you confuse them, you lose them"

Even if you’re incredibly good at what you do.

The Shift: From Explaining Your Work to Translating It

If you want to attract clients consistently, your job isn’t to explain your expertise and unique point of view in detail.

It’s to translate it into what's already on their mind.

That means you need to start with:
• what they’re already experiencing
• what they’re already thinking
• what they already want

Then bridge it into your deeper work.

For example, instead of saying:

“I help people regulate their nervous system and shift unconscious patterns.”

Say:

“I help people stop feeling stuck in patterns they can’t seem to break so they can finally move forward without second-guessing themselves.”

Same work, but different language.

One that connects, while the other doesn’t.

How to Make Your Coaching Message Actually Resonate

If you want your content to attract clients, focus on this:

• Speak to the experience first
• Then reveal the depth behind it (if you want)

This is where empathy becomes your most powerful tool.

Because as a coach, you already care about people deeply, understand them, and can often feel what they need.

Now you just need to bring that same care and empathy into your messaging.

Instead of speaking from your understanding...

Speak from the narrative of their world.

That’s when people start thinking:
“This is exactly what I’ve been experiencing.”

And when you can name someone's struggle better than they can,
they believe you can help them solve it.

That’s what moves them toward working with you.

Your Intelligence Isn’t the Problem — But Your Positioning Might Be

If you’re struggling to get coaching clients, it doesn’t mean you’re not good enough.

And you probably don't need another certification.

It usually just means your message isn’t translating your value in a way people can actually recognize.

Once you fix that, everything else becomes easier.

Your content lands, your audience grows, and clients start to see you as the obvious choice.
