Why Coaches Go Blank When Creating Content (And How to Get Your Voice Back)

If you’re a coach, healer, or facilitator, this might sound painfully familiar:

You’re confident in sessions.

You know exactly what to say when you’re with a client.

But the moment you sit down to create content — you freeze.

First the words disappear...
then your confidence...
staring at a blinking cursor wondering what’s wrong with you.

The truth most people never tell you is:

Going blank usually has nothing to do with talent, confidence, or content strategy.

In this episode, I break down why coaches go blank when creating content, why it happens even when you’re great in sessions, and what actually helps your voice come back... without forcing it.

Why This Happens to So Many Coaches (Especially Good Ones)

What most people miss is that becoming a coach isn’t just learning skills,

It’s a massive identity shift.

When someone trains as a therapist, nurse, or pilot, they’re held inside a system with mentors, supervision, peers, and shared language.

That environment acts like scaffolding, holding their new identity while it forms.

Coaches often have this during training.

But the moment training ends and you’re expected to build a business, show up publicly, speak with authority, and market yourself...

That scaffolding disappears.

Suddenly, you’re alone.

And when you try to create, without the support, you go blank.

It's not because you suddenly forgot how to coach, or you were a 'fraud' all along...

It's because the environment that supported your emerging identity vanished right when you needed it most.

Psychology has names for this:

Identity shock: when who you’re becoming no longer matches how your life is structured

Role strain: when you’re expected to perform a role you haven’t been supported to grow into

Your nervous system doesn’t read this as an opportunity for growth.

It reads it as a new, dangerous, and vulnerable situation.

And vulnerability + isolation = going blank.

“But Why Am I Clear in Sessions and Blank With Content?”

This is the part that confuses most coaches.
Coaching is relational, meaning your clarity comes alive in connection.

In a coaching session you have:
• real presence
• real energy
• real feedback

You’re responding to a human being with real needs.

Content creation, on the other hand, often feels like:
• isolation
• pressure
• performance

“sound confident or else”

Which means it's just you and a blinking cursor.
Of course it feels unnatural!

But here’s the important part:
If isolation were the only reason coaches go blank, no one would ever solve this.

Yet many coaches — including sensitive, introverted ones — do learn to create clearly and consistently.

So something deeper is happening.

The Real Reason Your Voice Disappears

When I looked at my own process, I noticed something crucial.
I would start inspired.
Connected.
Excited to share.

Then suddenly — a switch flipped.

I’d move from:
grounded
intuitive
service-oriented

into:
tense
pressured
self-conscious
overly serious

That shift isn’t random.

Researcher Brené Brown describes two states we move between:
Wholehearted — connected, open, intuitive, service-led
Armored — protective, performative, self-focused

And when something feels vulnerable — like public expression — we instinctively "armor up".

For coaches, the most common armor looks like:
• trying to fit in
• sounding “right”
• saying things the “proper” way
• performing a "confident" version of ourselves

Subconsciously, your nervous system says:
“I don’t feel safe being fully me yet...
let’s be who I think the world wants.”

That’s when your voice disappears, because you’ve disconnected from the empathy and service your work is actually fueled by.

Why Trying Harder Makes It Worse

Most coaches respond to this by:
• pushing harder
• forcing themselves to be more "consistent"
• pressuring themselves to “just write”

But that pressure keeps you armored.

And armor disconnects you from:
• empathy
• creativity
• direction
• energy

That’s why discipline alone eventually collapses.

What Actually Helps Your Voice Come Back

Instead of asking coaches to “create content,” I ask one simple question:

Who is one real person you genuinely want to help right now — and what do they actually need to hear?

That shift does everything. The body relaxes, words start flowing, and their natural brilliance returns.

Nothing magical happened, we simply moved attention from:

“I need to make content”
to
“I’m here to help someone real.”

That moves you out of performance and back into service, which is the same state where your coaching voice already works.

Want to dissolve the armor holding you back?
Speak to a person, not the internet.
